Sugaring vs Waxing?

Here at Sugar Me Wax, we are the leading Brazilian sugaring salon in the valley! We have dedicated ourselves to being the very best at sugaring so our clients have an experience that is second to none! If you are new to sugaring or hair removal in general, you may ask yourself "which is better for me?" This page can help you find the answer!

Sugaring Pros:

  • Clients who prefer sugaring say that sugaring hurts less than waxing.

  • Sugaring is more natural and gentle on the skin.

  • Sugaring lasts just as long as waxing -sometimes even longer!
  •  Sugar is a paste made from sugar, citric acid, and water.  It's a great, alternative to waxing!
  • The melting point of sugar is lower than wax, therefore it does not feel as hot on your skin.

Waxing Pros:

  • If this is your first time getting waxed or sugared, your aesthetician may decide to wax you.  If your hair is longer, very thick, or if you have coarse hair, the sugaring process can take longer and may be more painful. Consult your aesthetician in the room for the best process moving forward.  Once your hair thins, sugaring may be a great option.

  • Waxing techniques tend to be faster on large surface areas (i.e. legs, back, arms).

  • Waxing is more cost effective ($10 less for any service over $25).

Waxing and Sugaring are both excellent hair removal methods!

Whether you’re waxing or sugaring, the goal is always to remove hair at the bulb (or root).  That’s the sweet spot - the magic spot that retards hair growth, damages the hair follicles in a very controlled fashion, and creates the least painful hair removal process for consistent hair removal.

There are many purist salons out there that preach either only wax or only sugar.  We invite you to try both and figure out what is best for your particular hair removal needs.

For those of you who love to learn...let us teach you more information about sugaring.

Benefits of Sugaring

Pure and Natural Ingredients

The sugar paste we use is made solely of sugar, water, and citric acid. It’s completely edible and all natural. Because there are no harsh chemicals and no chemicals can be added to the sugar paste, this is an excellent option for those with sensitive skin, those who are prone to skin irritation, or simply those who advocate for a more natural approach to life.

Low Temperature

Sugar paste is only warmed to about body temperature, which results in no risk of burning the skin. With some people, there can be added irritation on the skin due to the heat of the wax. Therefore, with sugaring, you rule out any possible additional irritation from the heat.

Easier to Clean Up

Since sugar paste only contains sugar, water, and citric acid, it is water soluble. This means that it can be cleaned very easily and that leads to less sticky residue!

Sugar Doesn't Adhere to Live Skin cells

Since sugar paste is water soluble, it won’t stick to live skin cells because of the high water content. Leaving the live skin cells intact, means less irritation for your beautiful skin. Sugaring leaves skin feeling soft and smooth!

Sugaring is Faster

Wax needs some time to harden in order to be removed properly. Sugar does not require this time. Sugar is simply applied and removed immediately. This makes a sugaring appointment more time effective.

Sugaring is Even More Sanitary

At the beginning of a sugaring appointment, our aestheticians only get one ball of sugar and use that for the entire appointment. There is no need to go back to the sugar pot for more. Since we only get sugar at the beginning of the service, there is less chance of contamination. Additionally, with such a high  the sugar content, bacteria cannot grow in sugar paste.

Sugaring Causes Less Breakage

Waxing with an improperly trained aesthetician can potentially break about  30% of the hair. This means the hair can possibly break instead of being removed at the root and clients may see some immediate regrowth. During sugaring, however, the sugar paste is applied to the skin against the direction of hair growth. This allows the sugar to seep into the hair follicle. The hair is then removed in the direction of natural growth. This means little breakage occurs, leaving the skin much smoother.

Sugaring Removes Very Short Hair

With waxing,  hair needs to be one quarter of an inch (1/4″) long. That is 14 days of growth after shaving for most people. Sugaring has the ability to remove much shorter hair–about one eighth of an inch (1/8″)That is only about 7- 10 days of growth on average.
